Our Team

-

Sarinah

Our founder and director Sarinah Hurford launched Wellness Riders in 2017 after learning to skate as an adult and discovering her passion for coaching and empowering others to skate for their overall well-being and happiness.

Pablo

Meet Pablo Hurford, our gear guru, tech wizard, and skate enthusiast! He keeps things rolling smoothly behind the scenes while often shredding with the crew and sharing the stoke at our local skateparks.

Team Coaches

Our teen coaches are truly amazing! They show up every week and provide not only a coach, but an empowering and relatable role model for participants. Wellness Riders gives these teens a super fun paid job, a space to feel empowered while inspiring others and an awesome reason to get outdoors with their friends and family. Our motto “teens off screens’ and “start rolling, stop scrolling”!

The Committee Board

As a not for profit, Wellness Riders have an awesome board of legends! These folks keep us on track and ensure we stay true to our mission. They’re all about supporting the stoke, growing our impact and helping more kids discover the joy of skating.

How it works

-

Book a session

Want to check us out, simply book in for a single class free of charge! You can also book ongoing classes for the entire school term as spaces are limited and the term is most often fully booked in advanced. The booking link will allow you to join a class if we have space.

Borrow a board

If you don't have your own gear, we have skateboards, helmets and protection you can borrow if needed which we bring to every class. We have an awesome range of boards in our class fleet to enjoy including cruisers, trick boards, longboards & surf-skate boards!

Year round skate classes

We run classes every week of the school terms in Hastings, Hawke’s Bay. We also run some holiday programs in Napier and Auckland. All the classes have a first aid certified adult present alongside the teen coaches. Bring your whole family and relax in the park while we teach your kids to skate.

Frequently asked questions

-

What age groups do you cater to?

We welcome skaters aged 5 to 18, whether they’re just starting out or looking to level up their skills.

Does my child need their own skateboard?

Your child can bring their own board or borrow one of ours.

What safety gear does my child need?

We require kids to wear helmets during our classes! We also encourage the use of knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards. If you don’t have these, we can provide them—just let us know when you book.

How do I book a class?

Booking is super easy! Just head to the booking link or give us a shout on [email protected]

Can parents stay and watch?

Absolutely! We love having parents cheer on their little shredders. We’ve got a great spot with a playground and public toilets so you and the family can relax and enjoy the action.

What if it rains?

We skate year round, if the concrete is wet the class will be rescheduled during the school holidays.

About the classes

-

How long are the classes?

Each session runs for 60 minutes, giving kids plenty of time to learn, practice, and have fun.

What will my child learn in the program?

Our classes are designed to teach the fundamentals of skating including balance and control, basic to more advanced tricks (ollies, kick flips etc.) and skate park etiquette. We also teach mindfulness and confidence boosting skills, all in a safe and supportive environment.

How many kids are in each class?

To keep things fun and personal, we limit our class sizes to around 15 skaters per session.

What if my child has never skated before?

No worries! We specialise in helping beginners find their footing. Everyone starts somewhere, and we’re here to guide them every step of the way.

Practical info

-

Where are the classes held?

All sessions take place at William Nelson Skatpark in Hastings. We also hold meet ups and holiday programs on Marine Parade, Napier.

What happens if it rains?

If the weather doesn’t cooperate, we’ll cancel the class with as much notice as possible. Being sunny Hawke’s Bay this rarely happens.

How much does it cost?

Our classes are around $5 per session (partly funded by sponsors). This includes gear, safety equipment, coaching and supervision. For a one off class, they are absolutely free, you’ll just need to book online.

Do you offer discounts for siblings?

Thanks to the incredible  funding we receive from various bodies, we make our classes as cheap as possible, so the price is $5 per child per class.

What if my child wants to join mid-term?

That’s no problem! Just reach out, and we’ll help you find the best option to get started if we have spaces available.
